Scarewares are a common type of malware, which hide in hard drives and seek to steal financial information by aggressively encouraging users to purchase fraudulent anti-virus software. This type of malware can take remote control of the PC, and typically use the infected system for mass spam and fraudulent e-mailing, often to frighten victims into buying their own phony “premium” virus protection (from their own manufactured virus). It can be difficult to discern between scareware and actual viruses, which makes training even more essential.
